The 2015 NFL season is officially underway, which means that there are new faces on the field, new schemes to study, and new ways to watch the NFL. Gone are the days of the traditional NFL Sunday afternoon doubleheader on NBC, or afternoon games on CBS. Now, the same games are shown on NBC, CBS, Fox, ESPN, and NFL Network, with the games getting underway at 1pm local time. The new NFL Sunday Night Football doubleheader on NBC, which will air for the next four seasons, is also beginning this season.

The Portland Trail Blazers have had a tumultuous summer. Damian Lillard’s desire to stay with the only professional organization he’s ever known hovers over everything like a guillotine about to fall. Almost every day, there are rumors, reports, and rumblings. Fans are left attempting to decipher even the tiniest of movements. CJ McCollum, Lillard’s longtime backcourt partner, said he’s not concerned about Lillard’s mental condition.
McCollum recently addressed the rumors surrounding Lillard’s future in Portland. His demeanor suggests that if the rumors were true, the six-time All-NBA selection would say so.
However, given Lillard’s nine years with the Blazers and a solitary trip in the conference finals, one has to wonder how much more patience he has left.
Since reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2019, the Trail Blazers have suffered two first-round exits in a row. Last season, despite an outstanding series from Damian Lillard, the Blazers lost six games to the Denver Nuggets.
Lillard averaged 34.3 points, 10.2 assists, and 44.9 percent from 3-point range in 41.3 minutes per game. However, NBA MVP Nikola Joki had a fantastic series to help the Nuggets win. In the series, both offenses were outstanding (or the defenses were horrific). Portland had a 122.1 points per 100 possessions average, while Denver had a 123.4.
The NBA Finals weren’t even finished when the Lillard rumors began to circulate. Lillard was expected to seek a trade, according to True Hoop’s Henry Abbott. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said that “Lillard’s representatives” were in contact with the Blazers and other clubs.
While in Las Vegas training for the Olympics with Team USA, Lillard shot off the reports.
“If there is anything to say… I’m going to say it, and I’m standing by it.”
He hasn’t spoken in five weeks, despite the fact that training camp is just around the corner.

CJ McCollum spoke out on the Damian Lillard issue during an interview on ESPN’s The Woj Pod with Adrian Wojnarowski. Since 2015, the two have been the starting backcourt in Portland. Throughout that time, they’ve been the backbone of the attack.
McCollum thinks Lillard is dedicated to winning in Portland for the 2024–22 season, noting his longstanding teammate’s devotion.
“I believe his objective is to win a championship, and I think I have a decent idea of where he’s at. That is, at the end of the day, what we all want. We want to be in the greatest possible position to win a title. He’s going all-in. At this point, I believe I can say he’s all-in. At the end of the day, all he wants is to win.”
In today’s NBA, Lillard and McCollum are two distinct kinds of stars. After completing their college eligibility, they moved to mid-major Division I basketball schools and entered the draft. In 2012, Portland selected Lillard sixth overall out of Weber State; in 2013, the Blazers selected McCollum from Lehigh with the No. 10 pick.

Every move made or not made by the Portland Trail Blazers this summer has been met with conjecture about what it signifies for Damian Lillard’s status. At this point, nothing CJ McCollum can say on a podcast will be enough to soothe the fans. That’s a group that’s far beyond the point of panic.
Kelly Oubre isn’t signed by Portland? Lillard needs to make a trade request. His personal trainer joins the Philadelphia 76ers? Oh bad, Dame is leaving for Philadelphia, and we’ll have to make do with Ben Simmons! According to rumors, Lillard is ready to make financial sacrifices in order to leave Portland, allegations that even McCollum helped debunk.
For the first time since Lillard’s rookie season, the Blazers will have a new coach next season. Chauncey Billups is a first-time NBA head coach who inherits a team that had reached its peak under Terry Stotts. Billups is a former NBA Finals MVP who understands what it takes to reach and win the Finals.
Damian Lillard should at the very least give Billups a chance to learn how to read a map before abandoning the Trail Blazers and their supporters.
