Previously, the amount of numerals that could be used by each position on the field was strictly limited. However, over the offseason, the restriction was relaxed. Linebackers, defensive backs, tight ends, wide receivers, and running backs may now all wear single-digit jersey numbers, with certain limitations depending on their position.
Any player ready to pay for the threads for the current season was eager to do so. Players must purchase out their remaining allocation of jerseys with their previous number before switching to their new one, according to the NFL’s standing jersey production regulations. They are not required to purchase jerseys for the 2024 season, but they must notify the league in advance.
Around 46 players, including stars like Jalen Ramsey, Patrick Patterson, and James Connor, as well as first-round rookies like Ja’Marr Chase, Micah Parsons, and Kyle Pitts, took advantage of the new regulations to alter their numbers. (The full list may be seen on CBS Sports.)

It takes some consideration to decide to alter your number this year, but James Robinson went above and beyond most players and earned well-deserved praise for his efforts. With as little fuss as possible, the running back made his NFL debut. He went undrafted in 2024 after completing his collegiate career with the second-most running yards in Illinois State history.
Robinson signed with Jacksonville as a free agency and immediately proved to the NFL that passing on him was a mistake. In training camp, he earned the starting position and became just the fourth undrafted running back in NFL history to start the first game. Robinson became just the fourth undrafted player in NFL history to run for over 1,000 yards in his first season, and he established the record for most scrimmage yards by a rookie free agent.
Robinson wore No. 30 in his rookie season, but when the chance came, he switched to his old college No. 25. Purchasing a jersey that quickly goes out of date may be inconvenient. Robinson made it a point to thank supporters who purchased his jersey during his breakthrough season once he received it.

The action was greeted with applause, much to no one’s surprise. “That was a really nice move. A top-rated remark on a Reddit post regarding Robinson’s switchup says, “Haven’t heard of many players doing anything like this.” The majority of the other comments echo this viewpoint. It’s easy to understand why the running back is so thankful, given his journey to the league.
What are the opinions of other players on the rule change?
According to The Game Haus, most players were excited about the new jersey choices, even if they didn’t wear them. Jalen Ramsey and teammate Robert Woods fought over who would be the No. 2 quarterback. (The digit was ultimately claimed by Woods.)
However, one of the sport’s greatest stars has said unequivocally that he is not a fan. Tom Brady believes the new number regulation puts offensive linemen at a disadvantage since they are unable to keep track of who is wearing what uniform.
Brady has been in the NFL for longer than some rookies have lived. His response to the new normal, though, is more than a little ridiculous, considering his skill and composure under pressure. It didn’t seem to bother him much in Week 1.
